Hi all Barry and myself Maree are the new owners of the gardens. It all started when I went looking for a venue to get married in, I bought the venue. We intend to build on what is currently here. Unfortunately Dave took the museum with him but everything else is still here. My parents have moved down from Omaru to help us. Come in have wander around the garden then some yummy treats at the cafe and meet us we would love to say hi.
Our extensive gardens ‘A Hidden Treasure’ include a lake formally the heart of the Ashers lignite-pit in 1904, was an open cast pit and closed in 1971. The disused flooded pit covered in overgrown gorse, broom and dumpings now transformed into a 16 acre lakeside garden still features walls of lignite and retains the original pit. A waterfall flows over into the pit, while boardwalks and bridges link the walkways together.
The café overlooks this environmental project. Enjoy the home baking then take time to stroll and enjoying the gardens. Soak up the peacefulness, relax at resting stops. View the variety of plants and forests. Feed the wildlife. Appreciate some of the geology and history of the mine .
Available for weddings, Christmas and private functions, Educational school and family trips, Campervan parking and tenting or casual visits with friends and family.
