Age Of Garden: The original garden around the house was planted in 1952 by my parents but I have changed it a lot. The front of the garden was planted about 10 to 12 years ago. The grounds out toward the road are much younger and were designed by me to accommodate weddings. The latest project was this winter when a large pergola was built out of telephone poles.
Style: The original garden consisted of a large formal shrubbery with rows of trimmed shrubs. There are a lot of rhododendrons, agapanthus, hydrangeas and hostas with the front part more formal and consisting of a lot of buxus hedging. There are many special features and I find everyone that visits likes something different. I personally like the agapanthus, hostas, buxus and the rhodos.
Picnics Allowed: Yes, visitors are most welcome to bring a picnic lunch and have it in the garden.
Car Parking: Yes
This garden is a stunning example of a garden that has evolved over time. The large mature trees add structure and balance to the garden. As the garden has evolved it has melded well with the older parts. There is a sense of peace and tranquillity in the garden, Many birds share this space with us. Colour is seen for most of the year, spring bulbs to autumn colours on the tall trees.
I feel gardens are a very personal thing and reflect the personality of the owner. I really like contrasting foliage and things I can use for weddings as I am a florist by trade. It is only in the last 10 years that I have had the time to expand the garden as I do not need to work fulltime on the farm . We have a large stud farm and therefore have a lot of people visiting our place especially during ram selling in late November. I like them to get a good first impression when they come in the gate so take pride in always presenting neat, tidy grounds. A downside of where we are is the wind. It is quite exposed to certain winds and they can do a lot of damage. We get on an average 3 to 4 falls of snow a year but it is generally shortlived and is gone in 2 or 3 days. It would be a privilege to share our little corner of the world with anyone who would like to visit us.
